I took the day off work today to “celebrate” our anniversary. First thing on our list? Go fight the ticket Laura got last month. Why did she get a ticket you ask? Well, my guess is because the Sheriff that pulled her over was having a bad day. Or maybe he’s just a jerk on a daily basis.
One week last month, Laura had been feeling kinda miserable the entire week and hadn’t done much with the boys. However, she had promised our oldest son, Alex, that she would take him to Barnes and Noble. So on the one day that she felt halfway okay, she decided to take him. It was about 8:30pm so it was starting to get dark outside, but there was still some light. Anyway, one of the boys must have been playing with the headlights because Laura noticed that the bright blue light on the dash was on, indicating that the brights were on. She couldn’t really figure out how to turn the brights off so she was just playing with the light controls. (She was still in the drive way and hadn’t left yet.) Then the bright blue light on the dash goes off. Success!… so she thought.
She did managed to turn off the brights, but what she didn’t realize was that she actually turned off the headlights completely. So off she went to Barnes and Noble with no headlights. Since it still wasn’t that dark and we only live 2 blocks off Memorial Rd, which is very well lit, she didn’t notice they were off. She got three blocks down from our house when a Sheriff pulled her over. This guy was a JERK!
“Do you know why I pulled you over?” – I hate that question. It sure wasn’t cause you think I look good right? Just freaking tell me why you pulled me over. Anyway, Laura had no clue. Then he told her it was because she was driving with her headlights turned off. She explained what had happened but he didn’t care. Then he asked for her drivers license and insurance verification. Uh oh, she didn’t have her insurance card on her.
“I don’t have it, but I do have insurance”, she says, “can you just look it up on your computer?” Of course, they can do this, but he said that he couldn’t.
“I’m going to have to tow your vehicle.”
What the heck? Really? By this time, Alex is crying because he thinks that both he and his mom are going to go to jail. A 9 year old doesn’t know any better. That jerk didn’t care. Not one ounce of compassion. Laura tries to reassure him that it’s going to be okay and that neither one of them are going to go to jail.
While the Sheriff is in his car calling the tow truck, Laura calls me and asks if I can bring her the insurance verification. However, she left in the minivan with all the car seats for the kids and she had left me the other three boys. I don’t have any car seats for them in my little Hyundai Accent. “I can’t go or he’ll give me a ticket too”, I tell her. Then I get an idea. I took a picture of the insurance card with my phone and texted it to her. “Show him that and hope he takes it”, I tell Laura. When he came back, she showed it to him and to our surprise he accepted it. “Okay, I guess I’ll cancel the tow truck”, he told her. He still wrote her a ticket for “operating a vehicle improperly.” When she got home I looked up the amount. $219!! Just a few days before we had been told that she was going to need a transplant and that we needed to raise $4000 and now this? How much more bad luck can we get?
So that’s what was the first thing on our agenda for today. Go fight that stupid ticket. I drove down to the Oklahoma County Courthouse, to the DA’s office to contest it… and own. I explained what happened, showed them proof that the headlights worked fine, and they dismissed the ticket.
Then we went to Mathis Brothers to renew our family zoo pass. With four boys, this is very important for the summer. It gives them a nice distraction away from the TV. More importantly, I sometimes take them when Laura isn’t feeling well and just needs some time to herself. It’s a great deal at $49 for a year for the family pass.
Finally, we went to Minska Massage on NW 113th and May. We’d never had a professional message before. I bought a Groupon for this place back in December when Laura got out of the hospital because I figured we would need it after everything she had just gone through. However, we didn’t get the chance to use it until today.
The ladies there were awesome! Karie and Jessica took to time to ask if there were any areas we were we were hurting or anything we wanted them to concentrate on. The room was nice and dark with only a dimmed lamp on the side. They had nice soft music playing in the background. It was very relaxing. My lower back had been hurting for a while and when I walked out of there, I felt a lot better as did Laura. If you’ve never had a professional massage, I definitely recommend it. I don’t know if they are all the same or not, but I’d hit up Minska Massage and ask for Karie or Jessica.
Overall it was a great day. We got the ticket dismissed, bought the zoo pass, and got a massage. I’m glad Laura felt well enough today to be able to do all of this.
